| MARKING PATTERNS: BLK/TAN, BLUE/TAN, CHOC/TAN - All must have appropriate marking pattern according to APC guidelines, the "tan markings" can be a variety of shades from light cream to deep rust or silver. BRINDLE - Brindle is a striping pattern and can come in a varity of colors but have the distinct striped pattern. SABLE - Sable mean black tips and points, points is the pigment of nose, lips, eye rims, paw pads etc., with any color base coat. BLUE SABLE - Same as sable but no black is on the dog, ALL points and tipping is blue instead of black and can have any color base coat. PARTI - Parti means at least 50% or more white with spots of color, the spots of color determines the color of parti. A blaze on the forehead is preferred, see the discription of parti's on APC's site for more details of correctly marked parti's. A mostly white parti is referred to as a PIEBALD parti, where a parti that barely meets the requirements is called an IRISH marked parti. MERLE - Merle is a random dilute gene, it can manifest in many ways, NO 2 Merles are identical. There are many colors of merles but there is only 1 merle gene, what color of merle is based on which color is the base color. The merle gene does not act visibly on all colors so EXTREME caution must be used when breeding merles. Merle may or may not have blue eyes or blue flecks in the eyes, they can also be solid brown or hazel. A merle may not always look merle since the gene does not act visibly on all colors, and those are called a CRYPTIC merle, and must be treated the same as a well marked merle. NEVER breed a merle to a merle or it causes double dilute defective whites. |
| A SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING LAVENDERS - AKC DOES NOT recognize Lavender as a color, it is a dilute of chocolate the same as beaver is, so it is listed as Beaver by AKC, even though it has a very distinctive purplish tint. |
